Save Julian Assange!

This is the same site responsible for the petition that helped bring down the legislation that was going to allow the US Government to censor the Internet at will by taking down any sites they wish. Please help by filling out this petition, don't let our government outlaw freedom of the press under our watch!

Re: Save Julian Assange!

We're talking about the press that were inspired by the secrecy of the Bush Administration, and the spread of lies that lead to the Iraq war.

So you would have preferred the press to not be in Iraq?

The way I recall things, those of us outside the USA regarded
embedding as nothing more than a propaganda exercise.George
Bush's "Ministry of Propaganda" so to speak.

The choice was thus between

Saddams
Ministry of DisInformation(or whatever)

or

Bush's
"Ministry of Propaganda" (embedding)

The moral equivalency of such statements is amusing to me. It also seems such attitudes are on the rise in the past decade. Regardless, Assange deserves no help until he does something to aid all the translators and interpreters whom his infodump revealed to their enemies.

Given how banal the US documents are, he really shouldn't have wasted his time and put all those people at risk.

In Assange's defense, he did ask the US State Dept for advice on redacting the cables. State refused. Wikileaks haven't been great about document redaction in the past, but they have been doing a much better job lately. Some of the documents in their "war logs" dump were more heavily redacted than some of the versions that the DOD released due to FOIA requests.

A risky sort of banal? Like a "pumpkin spice frappuccino" risky banal or more an "Ikea Kivik loveseat in red" sort of risky banal?

More like a "Where's the beef?" banal. What do the logs show? Russia is run by a mafia formed by ex KGB? Saddam didn't have his hands on a trigger of a Chem laden skud, but had attempted to preserve old chem warheads and had bribed the UN to allow him to resume is program as soon as the heat was off?

What new, earthshaking news came out of the document drop that wasn't known before? Unless you are a card carrying member of the american left, who still haven't found any evidence that the war was illegal or that Bush had some grand conspiracy behind it. The logs even show that US oil companies didn't benefit much since other countries got in before them. That must be disappointing.
