It only makes sense until you think about it though.

"ascribing human form or attributes to a being or thing not human"

See an anthropomorphic animal would be like... Donald Duck, a duck that has been given human attributes. A human who has been given duck attributes is not anthropomorphic but zoomorphic. This is the simple point that I try to make that no one seems to get. When transformation is involved you have a base human form which you apply animal qualities too, that is the key element which disqualifies the character from technically being anthropomorphic as they are not having human qualities being given to them but taken away.

Not trying to ruffle any feathers or be contrary here, but I do love a good debate. One definition of something being anthropomorphic is simply 'having human characteristics'.

The transformation itself is zoomorphic- that is it's adding animal qualities. However, the result is both anthropomorphic and zoomorphic. It's my understanding that it's equally correct to say that the person has turned into a zoomorphic human as it is to say that they have turned into an anthropomorphic animal. An anthropomorphic animal is simply an animal with human characteristics, not necessarily only an animal that was later given human characteristics. I'm pretty sure that 'anthropomorphic animal' and 'zoomorphic human' describes the exact same thing. It is an animal with human characteristics and also a human with animal characteristics. It's not saying that the transformation itself is lending the person human characteristics, but rather it's saying that the person is transforming into an anthropomorphic animal (anthro for short).

Re: asfr themed stories on bearchive and cyoc?

We'll have to disagree on that. As far as I'm concerned my peeve only applies to the transformation process itself. Donald Duck never was a person or an ordinary duck, he never transformed to either be more or less human. But as we all know ducks aren't human, so the anthropomorphic aspect is inherent with him and with any talking animal character that started out that way. They simply are anthropomorphic because they have human qualities while not being human.

It's when you transform someone or something to be more or less human that you need to differentiate between anthropomorphism and zoomorphism. If the base form is a dog and you make it bipedal and give it speech then you've anthropomorphized it, you have given it human qualities that it did not possess previously. If the base form is a human and you give it a tail and make it walk on all fours then you zoomorphized it, you have given it animal qualities that it did not possess previously. True that it still possesses human qualities so long as it has not transformed completely into a dog but you have not performed the act of anthropomorphizing it, it did not gain human qualities that it previously lacked, it lost some instead.

So while in some contexts the two terms may seem interchangeable, for instance looking at a half human half animal character who's back story is unknown and it's unclear as to whether they started as a human or as an animal or just as they appear now you can say they could be either one or the other it's open to interpretation at that point. However, when you know for a fact that a character's original form was an animal and they later gained human qualities it makes them clearly and by definition anthropomorphic. Likewise if you know for a fact that a character started human and gained animal qualities later that they are zoomorphic or lycanthropic, they are not anthropomorphic if their altered state is defined by a clear loss of human qualities. Anthropomorphism is never defined by a loss of human qualities or an exchange of human qualities for animal ones.

Not completely, a discussion started about what ASFR meant and how the term is used for things that aren't robots. That got me to thinking about how anthro is used to describe things that aren't anthropomorphic, it's not a giant leap from one to the other.

Sorry for getting so off track though.

Well, it's not exactly what you asked for (and it's now defunct, though there's a fair bit of content to explore) but is this the sort of thing you were looking for?

Can't think of anything on the sites you specified though, sorry.

Edit: No wait, I remembered something

This restart has a few branches that lead into asfr areas. Like this one

Yes, D< is Deuce... though, he hasn't done much art in a long time, focusing instead on writing. (Which, to me, is just as good. ^_^ )
