" I watch the subbed version, then I watch the dubbed version right afterwards. "
Heh, didn't expect that I'd be the first voting on that.
Though it's usually more along the lines that I watched it subbed first, then I sort of feel like rewatching the series again but instead I watch it dubbed.

It definitely has to do with favorite VA's. For example I watched Death Note subbed but I wouldn't mind rewatching it dubbed after I found out that Brad Swaile did the voice of Light, whose voice I'm familiar with as Rock from Black Lagoon.

And I'll say Black Lagoon definitely fits much better dubbed than subbed.
I quite like Spike Spencer as Shinji from NGE, though I actually still relate his voice to Makie Stingray from Bubblegum Crisis 2040 and Akito Tenkawa from Martian Succesor Nadesico I suppose.

The English dub is always awful. On the other hand, film is such a visual medium that it's a shame to spend the whole time reading instead of viewing.

I think I will go watch Le Pacte des Loups again now...
Not true. City of lost children comes quickly to my head as well done.

Well, there is the fact that the brain rearranges letters automatically to a point, unscrambling them.

BTW - Is it wrong that I prefer the voice actors in the dubbed version of Ramna?

You aren't kidding...
I love playing games or watching something animated and pointing out Mr.Blum. It's even more fun when he only has a walk-in role with only like one line...it's "Find the Blum!", kinda a fun game.

Re: Subs vs. Dubs

With the exception of Cowboy Bebop and a couple other shows - caught it on Adult Swim after I had the DVDs - I only ever watch subtitled when I can help it. I still find myself looking for the Japanese language option on my Big-O dvd even though it was produced by CN. (Although obviously the voice actors do a really good job there, it's just the weird impression that I should be watching in Japanese). - just remembered the Disney/Miyazaki flicks - never got a chance to see those subbed theatrically.

Part of my thing - I have a LOT of foreign flicks/imports/etc - is that I have more trouble telling if someone is a bad actor in a different language (I'll put up with a bit more ;p), so I'll put up with a bit more. Hearing some grating English voice actor doing a weird androgyne or cutesie little girl is a lot harder to take than just hearing the original Japanese and catching the subtitles.

But yeah, I don't think dubbing into English has ever been a real strong point of the domestic industry (compared to dubbing English-language flicks in other countries). YMMV.

Re: Subs vs. Dubs

I find that even if in a game or something with subs and playing in english, I cant not read the subs, so I miss some of hte other things going on. I've had to rewatch gmae scenes after turning subs off before. I do still like watching subs on some anime. Higurashi had hooooooorrible dubbing. I cant take it seriously in dubs. I pick subs ;p Watching things onlien, like Kampfer, or when I watched Heaven's Lost Property. The latter was dubed and I like both dub and subs for that and will watch witchever one I happen ot come across. When I buy it evnetually I'll likely watch it all in dubs though since, like others here, I multitask alot ;p

And again, I do love some of hte english dub VAs.
