I don't see signing up as necessarily a bad thing. I used to hate the Yahoo Groups that required approval of the owner before you could view anything. I understand it was to keep spambots out, but it was annoying.

Re: TF-Media is BACK

I wonder if doc's lab recent and current DB issue (hosted on tf-media0 failure with lots of MySQL errors) is related to tf-media coming up.
Some conflict in the versions/issue with the two DBs stepping on each other perhaps?

Whoa. Just read that error message. The MySQL username and password are written in clear text for everyone that sees that error message! Good job, PHP.

Re: TF-Media is BACK

The Doc's Lab error has been fixed. It was a hosting problem.

I have no idea how their site is coded, and I'm not in control of whatever they're doing. If it was me, that username and password wouldn't have been printed, ever. :P

Re: TF-Media is BACK

I've saved a copy of the XML version of the stories (that aren't CYOT), and I've been placing them into separate word documents in my free time, and yes it took quite a bit of effort. I can send them to you if you want (it's in my dropbox anyways). I'm not entirely sure it's the full collection though, all I know is i started with around 100+ thousand lines to clear, and now I have around 20 thousand lines left.
The layout of the site is simplistic and elegant, I find that it's a really well made site with nice features. Thanks TFGuy.

Here's the link to the dropbox folder with the stories that I've managed to preserve... at least.

Not really php's fault. Moreso bad coding.
Does make me curious who's running the tech-side of doc's lab nowadays.

It's really a PDO issue, and PDO ships as part of PHP. Yes, error messages should not be turned on in a production environment and there should ideally be a try/catch statement wrapping the call, but things like passwords should never be echoed to output for any reason, even for debugging purposes. I don't know another data access product or ORM that does anything that catastrophically derpy when it dies.

You'll probably also notice the absence of a gallery as of right now - that was actually part of the reason the old site went offline, the popularity combined with the inefficient gallery led to the site being really slow. So, this time around, I want to make sure I do it right, so I'm taking my time designing and thinking about how I want the gallery to work from a technical standpoint. It'll be added eventually, it's just not there now.
I understand, it was more a lament of the loss of content then anything else. I had no illusions that you would bring everything back as if it were all a bad dream.

In case anyone's curious, the gallery has just been re-opened. Captions and Art are now available to be posted and viewed on the site.

Doc is. He's in charge of the whole ball of wax, and has been since I gave him back the keys a few years ago.
