Thanks as always for the kind feedback, good or bad, it's always a good motivator.
Character has always been important to me, but I think my earlier stories it was the expansion technique that took center stage. My two more recent stories have fairly basic growth mechanisms but focus much more on personality and character dynamics. And they're longer stories too... so... much... longer.
