Sure, suspension of disbelief got me past the na'vi, their weird brain ports, floating rocks (low gravity is mentioned along with whatever weirdness is in that spot)

but.. Where does the water in those floating rocks come from? They're just pouring water all day long from *where*? The mist around them cant provide that much moisture.

sigh.

Really? That's the part that bugged you? There's a lake on top of those rocks. They're big. It floats around in mist and gets rained on from being in a tropical rain forest climate. No one said that waterfall falls all the time. Maybe it only falls after rain makes the lake over flow.

That's silly. That's like the scientist who didn't like the shot where the gas giant is visibly rotating in the background because it would have to be rotating 50 times faster than Saturn.

The real giant coincidence of the movie is that the Na'vi don't have six legs like all the other creatures of the world they live on. By all rights they should be centaur cat people if they live on the moon of hexapods.

So, did you go see it yet? I'm worried that if enough people don't go see it people will stop making movies with catgirls in them. I hear it's not doing very well.

The idea of floating islands has been around for a while. You see them in Roger Dean paintings for instance.

How very wrong you are.

The movie has already made over one Billion worldwide.

The movie cost $237 Million to make, so yeah...its doing damn good.

On the ALL TIME WORLD RECORDS of Box Office Sales, Avatar is #2 right below Titanic (ironically another James Cameron film)

International box office records are basically useless though, since it's impossible to adjust for inflation. For what it is Avatar is doing well, but you can't really compare it to other movies.

Re: Go see Avatar

I didn't think Titanic was a particulary great film either and I hear it did all right in theatres.

I was out with my boyfriend's brother and sister-in-law last night. His bro repeatedly referred to avatar as "Pocahontas in Space". Pretty accurate, actually.

Oh, and jake you can stop worrying because two sequels have already been greenlit.

Re: Go see Avatar

Chrono trigger had floating islands too, its a concept thats been around.

I find it weird that the planet wasn't ridiculously radioactive though, as unobtanium breaks down pretty quick, so that's a lot of protons and neutrons flying around (yes unobtanium is a real element).

Also, they were totally Ethernet cables people gosh.

Zeal was powered by black magic extracted from an immortal planet eating turtle living in the center of the planet. I think Cameron was shooting for slightly more realism than that.
