Well being turned into a Mindflayer is likely perferable to having them suck your brains out. Like a lot of FF monsters Mindflayers where burrowed from another source, Dungeons and Dragons, which of course burrowed the concept from Chutulu the giant demon priest of the Elder Gods. Though I think the picture is depicting the Marbolo Virus at work, as Mindlfayers are humanoid Mollousks and Marbolos are tenticle monsters

The title of the image is "rena-lamia". One of the main characters of FFV.
